“Twitter has long served as a resistance tool for citizens in other nations.” – Aja Romano, Vox, January 28, 2017

Twitter was founded eleven years ago this week. The social media site lets registered users post 140-character ‘tweets’ that can be read by anyone. Users can also ‘follow’ other accounts, such as @BBC, @EPA, @SenSanders, or @nytimes, to get up to the minute news.

Sadly, Trump has used the official Presidential Twitter account (@POTUS) and a personal account (@realDonaldTrump) to bully the media, other countries, and regular Americans who disagree with him. He’s also said Twitter helped him become President.

But Twitter has been a critical tool for organizing against Trump policies, from the Women’s March to this week’s defeat of Trumpcare. Twitter is also a good way to follow organizations and news outlets that you respect.

Many groups we’ve mentioned on prior days, like @Indivisible, @Flippable and @SwingLeft, have Twitter accounts; so do Members of Congress and promising candidates like Jon Ossoff in Georgia’s 6th. Twitter is also home to new ‘alternative’ agency accounts (@AltEPA, @realALTNPS, @RogueNASA), which are used to counter Trump’s alternative facts. We’re on there, too!

Twitter is easier to set up than email, and less personal than Facebook. So what are you waiting for!?

Today’s Action: Set up a Twitter account today! If you have an account, follow us, @misciendias!
