We’re 50 Days in . . . time to think about winning back 50% of the House and Senate.
There are three critical ingredients to democratic renewal and progressive change in America: good public policy, grassroots organizing, and electoral politics. – Paul Wellstone (1944-2002)
It is downright frustrating, watching the Trump White House and the GOP leadership in Congress work to dismantle the progress we’ve seen in the last decade . . . especially when we already had so much more work to do, to battle injustice and provide opportunity for all. Luckily, we don’t have to stand idly by.
For the last 49 days, we’ve learned more about our communities and our government, and contacted elected officials to make our voices heard. That will continue. But today, we want to embrace a vision for the Majority – to be in the majority in the Senate, in the House, and in Governor’s mansions across the U.S.
This vision can become a reality in 2017 and 2018 . . . but not without a lot of hard work.
Luckily, several great organizations are working on this. Two that we like are Swing Left, focused on the House, and Flippable, which is targeting state elections. (We couldn’t find an organization targeting the Senate, which will be a tough battleground for Democrats in 2018 – consider starting one!)
Many Americans are impatient with both major parties. If you are feeling a bit of that, don’t panic! If you want the Democrats to change their position on an issue, join your state party and work to change the platform. If you have a yawn-inducing Democratic representative, recruit a challenger who will re-energize the district or nudge the incumbent in the right direction. There are lots of options – just get involved and help make our country sane again!
In 2017 alone, we will have 5 special elections in the House, replacing members who are in the Trump Administration or California governent; and in November, governors’ races in NJ and VA.
Today’s Action: It’s never too soon to sign up, contribute, volunteer, and organize for the 2017 and 2018 elections. Get involved today! Talk about it on social media!
