Stephen Bannon wields immense power in the Trump White House. If that doesn’t worry you yet, keep reading.
Week 1 of the Trump Administration, an intelligence official told the press Bannon was running a cabal, almost like a shadow NSC out of the West Wing. That quickly changed – in a highly unusual (and controversial) move, Trump appointed Bannon to the real National Security Council while removing the director of National Intelligence and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from this post.
It is widely believed Bannon was the driving force behind the Muslim ban, a centerpiece of his white identity strategy. In a manifesto he penned, Bannon wrote that the alt-right is “unapologetically embracing a new identity politics that prioritizes the interests of their own demographic.”
Before joining the Trump team, Bannon promoted his worldview as editor of Breitbart, an alt-right blog posing as a news site. This openly racist, misogynist, anti-Semitic outlet has published such stories as Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy; Bill Kristol: Republican Spoiler, Renegade Jew; and Would you Rather your Child had Feminism or Cancer?.
In other highlights, Bannon has been charged with domestic violence (charges were dropped), called the media the “opposition party” and told them to “keep their mouths shut“, and responded to criticism post-election by stating, “Darkness is good. Dick Cheney, Darth Vader, Satan. That’s power.”
Luckily, we still have humor on our side. McSweeneys is collecting Dear President Bannon essays. Read a few. Or pen your own! It’s therapeutic.
