Let’s remove barriers to voting and push for election day voter registration!
DAY 21 ACTION: Ask your state rep to support same-day voting!
Before the 24th Amendment abolished them, poll taxes made it more difficult for economically disadvantaged people to vote. Library of Congress.
It’s a theme we keep returning to, because voting is fundamental to a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Tens of millions of eligible voters did not vote in the 2016 Presidential election. If ‘did not vote’ had been a candidate, they would have won in a landslide. And so, we ended up with Trump.
There are several reasons people don’t vote. (One reason is, they don’t like the candidates. We’ll talk about running for local office at a later date!) But many people just don’t register in time. Election day registration would overcome this hurdle.
** If you have 10 minutes, read the voting laws roundup 2017 from the Brennan Center, for a survey of state voting legislation. **
Fifteen states plus the District of Columbia now authorize same day registration (Hawaii’s law won’t go into effect until 2018). This legislative session, 16 other states are considering same-day registration bills. Where is your state on the list?
NOTE: You should already have the phone numbers for your state Rep and your state Senator in your phone, from Day 9! If not, use this link to find your state Rep and Senator and enter their phone numbers into your phone now!
Today’s Action: Find out if your state legislature is considering a same-day voter registration bill.* If it was introduced by a Rep., call your state Representative and urge them to support the bill! If it was introduced by a Sen., call your state Senator and urge them to support the bill! Let us know on FB, Twitter or Instagram what you find out!
*This link froze on us a couple of times. If you do not see a map of the U.S. or at least a list of states and bills, hit the back button and then on the previous page, click on “same day registration: opportunities: view all”. The list doesn’t work as well on a mobile device.
